Microsoft Word Sales Face U.S. Ban -- InformationWeek

An appeals court on Tuesday ordered Microsoft to stop selling Microsoft Word 2007 and other Office 2007 products by Jan. 11 because the software infringes on a patent held by a Canadian company. The judge also hit Microsoft with a $290 million fine.

Buy MS Office while you can! Or save your money and reclaim your freedom by using OpenOffice.org instead. :-)

For once Microsoft has to answer the call of justice. The XML format is the foundation of Office 2007. What will they do without it? Assuming it's possible to re-write the software and re-distribute it by the Jan. 11 deadline, I think it's safe to say Office developers will be getting no time off this holiday season.

That may be the plan--very interesting to follow. I'm really surprised it got to this point.
