Oil reaches Louisiana shores - The Big Picture
via boston.com
All of the images of the aftermath of the STILL ongoing oil spill from boston.com are amazing, but this one really hit me. If we don't learn big time from this one and make serious changes in what we're doing, we deserve nothing less than what we get.
It's too bad we humans have the astoundingly bad combination of tremendous power and even more tremendous stupidity, because it's the animals and the environment that take the hit.

I really wish we didn't have so much reliance on oil, but the reality is that we are stuck with it for the time being. I am a very strong supporter of the green energy movement, but we aren't there yet. We still need to drill to try to take us away from dependency on foreign oil. But I sincerely hope in the long term that we can nearly eliminate oil from our country's infrastructure.
It's sad that it might take events like this to push us hard in the right direction, but we can't keep waiting. Screw the auto industry, screw the oil industry, and screw everyone else involved with this mess. The government needs to make a bold move like "no more drilling after 2020" and we'll figure it out. We always do. Unless that happens we'll keep making these same mistakes over and over again, and eventually one of these incidents will be too big to fix (if this one isn't already).
I can't help but think if we had the political climate we have today back in the 60s, we never would have made it to the moon. We used to solve big problems quite well in this country. Now greed runs the show.
